Esmeralda sat in the chair, her legs tucked beneath her, reading a book. It was late and everyone had long since gone to bed, leaving her alone and bored. She turned the page, not really interested in the contents of the book, just trying to pass the time. She didn't find it necessary to sleep as much as he did, always going to bed after him and waking before him. She contemplated going to the kitchen for something to eat, but discarded the idea.
She closed the book, sitting it on the end table, and decided that she might as well go to bed too. She stood up and walked over, blowing the candle at the desk out and was heading for the stairs when a faint tapping caught her ear. She paused, her hand still on the banister, as she tried to figure out where it was coming from. She turned and walked slowly into the common room lounge, looking around. She turned toward the window sharply as it resumed. She walked cautiously to the window and peered out into the darkness. There, resting on the window ledge, looking back at her, was a tawny owl. It met her gaze, giving her a rather impatient look as she fumbled with the latches on the window. After cursing loudly, she managed break the paint seal on the window, cringing as it slid up loudly.
She turned to the side just as the owl flew past her, landing on one of the chairs and spreading its wings, began to shake itself out. Ugh, Esmeralda groaned as feathers drifted slowly to the floor. She reached down, untying the small scroll of parchment from the birds left leg and opened it slowly as she walked to the cupboard to get one of the Eeylops Owl Treats that she kept there. She tossed it absently at the owl, who scarfed it down and proceeded to take flight, scattering more feathers as it soared threw the still opened window.
Esmeralda didn't take notice as her attention was focused on the parchment she was now reading. She took a seat near the fireplace, reading it over once more as a familiar anticipation began to creep over her. She licked her lips, her eyes lighting up. "God Bless Linda," she said aloud as she started for the stairs again, gripping the paper in her hand still. She crept upstairs as quietly as she could, not wanting to rouse the others. She new they would forbid her to go, it being against the rules and such.
She slipped soundlessly into the girls room, careful not to make a sound as she dressed, slipping into a pair of jeans that were already becoming too snug, cursing silently. She was gonna have to get some new clothes soon and detested the idea. She rummaged through the drawers and pulled out a pale blue short sleeve button up shirt. She grabbed her boots from the closet and glanced back at the sleeping form beneath the blankets before slipping out and closing the door behind her.
She made her way back to the living room and pulled her boots on hastily before walking to the closet near the front door and retrieving her cloak. She slipped it on and started to close the door when her eyes fell on the mask tucked onto the top drawer of her counter. She hesitated briefly before reaching up and grabbing it, deciding that it was better safe than sorry. She tucked it beneath her cloak and started to walk out of the common room when she turned to see a shawy figure leaning against the door.
